MagSafe Cases Explained: Do You Need One for Your iPhone or Galaxy?
MagSafe is one of the most useful features on modern iPhones, but the wrong case can get in its way. Here's what it does and how to choose a case that works with it.
What is MagSafe?
MagSafe is Apple's ring of magnets built into the back of the iPhone (from the iPhone 12 onwards). It lets accessories snap into the right position:
- Wireless chargers line up with the charging coil automatically.
- Wallets and grips attach to the back of the phone.
- Car mounts and stands hold the phone magnetically.
Why your case matters
A regular case without magnets puts plastic between the phone and the accessory, which weakens the magnetic hold. Wireless charging can still work through a thin case, but wallets and car mounts may slide off.
A MagSafe-compatible case has its own magnetic ring built into the back. It lines up with the iPhone's magnets, so accessories attach to the case firmly and wireless charging still works through it.
What about Samsung Galaxy phones?
Samsung Galaxy phones don't have a built-in magnet ring like the iPhone. A magnetic case adds one, which lets you use MagSafe-style magnetic chargers, wallets and mounts with your Galaxy. Wireless charging still works through the case.

Do you need a MagSafe case?
- Yes, if you use a MagSafe charger, wallet, grip or car mount, or plan to.
- Not necessarily, if you only charge with a cable. A non-magnetic case is fine, and some decorative styles (like our iPhone Air non-MagSafe rhinestone case) are made without a ring.
How to spot a MagSafe case on our store
Look for "MagSafe" or "magnetic" in the product name, and check the Common questions section on the product page. It tells you whether the case has a built-in magnetic ring. Most of our clear, frosted, matte, silicone, glitter, rhinestone and kickstand cases include one.
